It looks like the weather is finally turning into a summer time mode. Hopefully we wont see anymore of those 40 degree nights. The spring winds have knocked us out a few trips here and there but Ive definitely seen worse weather in previous Springs.
OFFSHORE- Deep drop fishing has improved dramatically over the past few weeks. Its not that the fish weren't there, it was just the fact that water temp was lower than normal that had the spiny and smooth dogfish all over the place. They get so thick at times that you can hardly get your bait down before those green-eyed bastards cover you up. Our last 2 trips to the Canyon were ZERO dogfish. We have had some great trips on citation class blueline tilefish and black sea bass up to 6 pounds. We have mainly concentrated our efforts in the 50 fathom range targeting the tiles and black sea bass. Excellent fishing and great tablefare; and we have had a ball watching our "first timers" crank up those triple headers from 300 feet.
Trolling-Bluefin tuna fishing has been outstanding down South. The Carolina fleet has enjoyed one of the best Springs they have had in years on the tuna bite. Blackfin, Bluefin and the coveted Yellowfin tuna have made a strong showing as well as gaffer Dolphin. This past weekend one charter had hooked and released their first 500 pound Blue Marlin for the season. That warm water is pushing this way. Bluefin tuna have already been landed by a few charters from Va. beach.
Looks like the closest warm water is a 55 mile run to the 100 fathom curve East of the Cigar. Definitely within striking range. Look for the offshore trolling action to heat up in the next couple of weeks and stay strong all summer long!
INSHORE-Sea Bass, Sea Bass and more Sea Bass! The inshore wreck fishing has been outstanding so far this Spring. So far its mainly bass, bluefish and a few tautog and flounder but as the water warms it wont be long before the spadefish, amberjacks, triggers, and cobias will be found cruising these wrecks offering some world class rod bending action! What a blast!! Big black drum are also making a strong showing on the Eastern Shore shoals and the bridge tunnel
NEARSHORE BOTTOMFISHING-Croakers and flounder are the hot item right now. Good action on the nearshore trips with some cooler filling happening. Mullet, drum and speckled trout are also in the mix.
Things are heating up in a hurry and looks like we are going to be in for a great summer! Its not too late to get your trip scheduled. Weekends are filling up fast. Weekdays are by far the best fishing days however when there is far less boat traffic. LETS FISH! |
